6 Things You Didn’t Know About Bremerton (Unless You’re a Navy Buff or My Mom)
Oh, Bremerton. You Salty, Underrated Little Gem.
Hi, I’m Stacia Whatley — Kitsap County native, real estate wizard, glam-ma of two, and passionate truth-teller when it comes to all things Peninsula life. If you’ve been sleeping on Bremerton, WA, grab a cup of ferry-grade coffee and settle in. We’re about to unpack six surprising facts about this Navy-soaked, tunnel-hiding, almost-capital kind of town.
And no, this isn’t your average history lesson. This is Bremerton
1. The Bremerton-to-Seattle Ferry Ride: Not Just a Commute — A Whole Mood
Let’s kick this off with what I like to call Bremerton’s most glamorous feature: the ferry ride to Seattle.
Now I know what you’re thinking:
“Stacia, it’s just a boat ride. Calm down.”
But hear me out — this isn’t just any boat ride. This is one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the entire country. And I’m not the only one saying that — actual travel magazines and ferry aficionados (yes, that’s a thing) agree.
Picture this:
You’re gliding across Puget Sound, salty sea breeze in your hair, Mount Rainier looming in the background like it’s been photoshopped into the sky, and the Seattle skyline slowly coming into focus like a cinematic reveal. If you’re lucky, you might even spot an orca or a sunbathing sea lion just chilling on a buoy like they own the place.
It’s like a free scenic cruise… if your cruise line served vending machine snacks and ferry coffee that tastes like regret. But hey, the experience is priceless.
And let’s not forget — you’re skipping I-5 traffic, which is basically its own circle of hell. So yes, Bremerton gets bonus points just for this maritime magic.
2. Meet the USS Turner Joy — Bremerton’s Very Own Battleship Celeb
Next up, let’s talk about one of Bremerton’s most iconic residents (and no, it’s not me): the USS Turner Joy.
This Vietnam War-era destroyer is permanently docked on the waterfront like a floating museum of badassery. And while she’s officially retired, she still commands attention like a naval Kardashian.
You can climb aboard, roam the decks, press buttons you probably shouldn’t, and immerse yourself in stories of combat, camaraderie, and Cold War-level tension. It's like stepping into a Tom Clancy novel — only this one doesn’t require subtitles or a CIA clearance.
The Turner Joy also played a role in the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which (spoiler alert) basically kicked off the Vietnam War. So yeah, she’s got receipts.
History buffs, military families, or anyone who loves a good Top Gun moment — this is your jam. And it’s right here in Downtown Bremerton.
3. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard: Where Big Boats Go for a Tune-Up
Now let’s talk about Bremerton’s engine room — the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
This isn’t your average dry dock. This place is a full-blown naval industrial complex, baby. It's where massive warships go to get spruced up, upgraded, or taken apart entirely — like a spa day for steel giants.
Founded in 1891, the shipyard has been the economic and cultural backbone of Bremerton for over a century. If you grew up here, there’s a 99.9% chance your dad, mom, uncle, neighbor, or random guy at the grocery store worked at the shipyard at some point.
It’s also the largest employer in Kitsap County and a hub of military innovation — from nuclear sub maintenance to carrier retrofits. And guess what? You can see it all from the waterfront boardwalk. It’s like watching a real-time documentary on the U.S. Navy’s greatest hits.
Just don’t try to hop the fence. Those guys don’t mess around.
4. Bremerton’s Underground Tunnels: Fact, Folklore, or Future Netflix Doc?
You read that right. Underground. Tunnels. In Bremerton.
I’m not saying we’re hiding lost treasure or housing secret superhero lairs (but also... not not saying that). What we do know is that underneath the historic parts of downtown Bremerton, there’s a maze of tunnels that once connected buildings for everything from deliveries to... let’s say... “social activities” during Prohibition.
Some say they were used for moving coal, others claim they were speakeasy shortcuts. Either way, they’re mysterious, old, and full of character — kind of like your uncle who still wears bell bottoms unironically.
Tours pop up from time to time, and if you ever get the chance to take one, do it. It’s spooky, fascinating, and the perfect spot to practice your best Indiana Jones impression.
Just don’t bring a Ouija board. We don’t play that game in Kitsap.
5. Bremerton: The Biggest City in Kitsap (Surprise!)
Look, I know Poulsbo gets all the charm points, and Bainbridge is basically the prom queen of Kitsap — but Bremerton is the biggest city on the block.
That’s right. With a population hovering around 44,000 residents, Bremerton beats out all the other Kitsap darlings in sheer size. We’ve got the most people, the most zip codes, the most complicated parking, and probably the most “what’s that smell?” moments. (It’s the ocean. Mostly.)
But size doesn’t just mean numbers — it means diversity, infrastructure, opportunity, and a whole lotta potential.
From affordable housing options to a rapidly growing arts scene and ferry-friendly commuting, Bremerton is coming into its own — and if you haven’t visited in a while, you’ll be surprised at what you find.
6. Bremerton Was Almost Washington’s State Capital (And I’m Still Bitter)
Let me hit you with a plot twist: Bremerton was once in the running to become the capital of Washington State.
I know, right? Imagine our little Navy town with the Capitol Building dome instead of Olympia.
Back in the late 1800s, Bremerton was in serious contention to host the capital. It had the strategic port, the industry, the location... but alas, it was beat out by Olympia because they... had more votes. Democracy, am I right?
To this day, I like to imagine what life would be like if the state government was based here. Probably more ferry rides, more seafood lunches, and a way cooler backdrop for press conferences.
But hey, we’re still the capital of cool in Kitsap. (Okay, I made that up. But let’s roll with it.)
So... What Did We Learn?
Bremerton isn’t just a military town or a ferry pit stop. She’s layered, she’s salty, she’s historic, and she’s glowing up in all the right ways.
To recap:
She gives you one of the prettiest commutes in the U.S.
She’s home to a floating piece of U.S. history
She keeps the Navy running smoothly
She’s hiding a network of underground tunnels
She’s the biggest city in the county
And she was almost the capital of the whole dang state
Not bad, right?
